鎌北湖・Kamakitako

October 20th

Start&Finish: Start at Higashi Agano station, finish at Musashi Yokote (or the other way round if you prefer)

The weather: Glorious autumn sunshine. Not too hot and not too cold.

Outfit/Equipment: Lightweight trousers, tshirt, hat, sunglasses, hiking shoes

Map: You can find a good map here.

Crowds: There were a few marathons and ultra marathons in the area so were passed by intermittent groups of runners. Other than that, very quiet.

Time: We started hiking at 9:30 and reached the station around 1pm

Difficulty: 22,082 steps.

It was a glorious day which probably coloured our impression of the area. It was a lovely walk though. There was plenty of variety in the scenery and the lake was beautiful. It was our first proper hike in the mountains, away from the most popular trails, but the hike wasn’t too difficult (the map ranks it as beginner level) and was a good place to start. I even saw my first ever wild kamoshika which was very exciting!

Towards the end of the hike there is a little shrine next to a waterfall. You have to pay 200 yen to go in and take a look. We did and I found it very pretty.
